The number one thing holding us from the no-makeup goal? Dark spots. Uneven skin tone keeps us reaching for our makeup bag again and again. I talked to a few dermatologists to check out if there are ways to get rid of discoloration forever.
“Dark spots or hyperpigmentation are because of the excess of melanin in the skin by melanocytes,” explains Skin Care. This excess melanin can be fastened by a lot of different things. “Hormones—both estrogen and progesterone—can enhance the level of melanin (why pregnant women see dark spots that often lighten following birth); the sun can enhance the level of melanin (why we have more dark spots after the summer); and age can increment the size of the melanocytes (why we see dark age spots in older patients),” says Skin Care. Rest factors such as skin irritation as a fact of acne, waxing, and harsh scrubs can also inflict dark spots.While we can’t owe that we can avoid an odd complexion for good, we did get a few experts from SkinCare to find effective treatments for hyperpigmentation.
You’ve heard it a million times—sunscreen is not anymore taken as a nice-to-keep; it’s a 100 percent necessary item for 365 days of the year. “Dark spots will get darker with sun exposure,” says board-certified dermatologist and founder of SkinCare. “Sunscreens, and especially physical sunblocks that own either zinc oxide or titanium dioxide, can prevent most of the rays that will darken the dark spots.”

Lasers are the most expensive yet most effective treatment to reduce dark spots. “These use a focused beam of light that has a specific target or chromophore (pigment) to disintegrate and get rid of the pigment particles in the skin,” explains SkinCare. “IPL (intense pulsed light) can dampen unwanted pigmentation. However, it gives out less focused light and may leave an unwanted effect on the surrounding skin, specifically in darker or tanned skin.”
